de Blob (Wii) - Review

de Blob, developed by Blue Tongue and distributed by THQ, is an interesting title - there’s similarities to Katamari Damacy throughout, but though it is not as quirky as that title, there’s still little touchs that remind me of why I enjoyed that game.  de Blob is a very good effort for a third party Wii game; it’s fun though can be tedious near the end, but does have a lot of collection items that will interest those types of games.  The presentation is very well done, particularly in the sound department.  It’s definitely the type of game that will appeal to those that like ones that go off the beaten path.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (PSN) - Review

quest-cover Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty is a downloadable title from Insomniac games for the PlayStation 3, continuing on from Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction in both story and gameplay.  The overall game continues the high quality work from Insomniac in the past and include new gameplay elements, but there are some aspects of design that are questionable and make the game feel as if it is lacking in features and content.  It is still a good effort and captures the series’ gameplay faithfully, but I feel more could have been done for such content.

PixelJunk Eden (PSN) - Review

eden-cover PixelJunk Eden is the third game from Q-Games on the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 and is probably the most abstract game of the three.  The game is based on using your “grimp” character to swing on plant to collect pollen, pollinating seeds that will grow into new plants in order to reach the farthest heights of each “garden”.  The core gameplay, visuals, and soundtrack are excellent, though there are a few questionable elements that could have been removed to make the game much tighter, but overall the game is fun and enjoyable.

The World Ends With You (NDS) - Review

cover The World Ends With You is a non-traditional RPG from Square Enix and Jupiter for the Nintendo DS that uses a battle system that involves a lot of use of the touchscreen.  There are a lot of gameplay aspects within the game, but the game itself is wisely crafted around those elements to allow you to use as many or as little of the elements as needed, effectively letting you drink as much of the game as you want but tempting you with better rewards if you take on the added challenges.  This approach, as well as the overall combination of tight gameplay, interesting story, and outstanding design, make this one of the most impressive RPGs that I’ve seen in a long time.

Grand Theft Auto IV (360) - Review

gta4-cover Rockstar’s latest entry to the Grand Theft Auto series, GTA IV, has finally arrived after several months of delay, and is one of the most anticipated titles this year.  The first game on the next-generation consoles, there has been a lot of promotion about the game, to the point where it could have been a failure easily.  For the most part, however, the game is very good; the story and characters are very engaging, the new features, if not borrowing from other open-world games, are well done, and there’s a lot of content to keep one busy for quite a while.  The major place where I found the game to be lacking was that despite several new toys to play with as part of missions, the bulk of the missions in game were essentially nothing new from previous games in the series, and that some new features in the game made the game a lot simpler than I remember it being.  Certainly these are not enough to ruin the game, as it is still a instant buy for anyone that’s played the series before, but there are signs that unless the formula is mixed up a bit, there’s potential for GTA burnout before too long.

God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP) - Review

god of war God of War: Chains of Olympus is a prequel to the God of War series, moving from the PlayStation 2 to the PSP by Ready at Dawn studios. Despite the change of platform and developer, the game retains the great flavor that the other two God of War games in both action, setting, and presentation, with the only major mar being the poor PSP controls that the game requires. It is also a bit on the short side, but it definitely is fun while it lasts.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) - Review

ssbb-cover Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Nintendo’s highly anticipated followup to the Gamecube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee. Not only does the game expand the cast of characters, now including Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog to the core Nintendo cast, it adds in some new gameplay features such as Assist Trophies and Final Smashes, to make the game exciting. Add in the ability to play both single player and with others over Nintendo’s Wi-Fi network, and there’s countless hours of gameplay. The game has definitely lived up to the hype that it has been generating over the past few years.

Destroy All Humans! 2 - Review (PS2, XBX)

dah2-cover Destroy All Humans! 2 continues Pandemic’s mix of open-world and shooter, mixing up the formula from the first game a bit without affecting too much of the humor or other aspects to make a pretty decent sequel. Unfortunately, some of the changes come at the expense of making the game almost a non-challenge to complete, and thus resulting in a title, while interesting, is hard to spend an appreciable amount of time playing.

Destroy All Humans! (XBX, PS2) - Review Repost

dah_cover Destroy All Humans! is a pretty tight game, satirically capturing B-movie alien attacks with a GTA-type approach to gameplay; it’s only flaw seems to be a lack of being completely original.

(This is a review that I did before I started grading games, so the grades are based on my retrospective opinion of the game.)

Killer7 (PS2, Wii) - Review Repost

killer7-cover Killer7 gained hype both through amazing stunning graphics, and word of mouth as being a piece of art rather than a game. While the end product is a strong, plot-driven game with graphics that still live up to the initial reports, the end result has some rough spots, with the game itself getting in the way of being able to appreciate Killer7 as art.

The game takes place “now”; you play as a member of an elite assassin group called Killer 7 (hence the title), which (at the start of the game) seems to be made up of 7 distinct persons but that are able to switch places with themselves at will. The backstory is developed throughout the game, and explaining more would be definitely spoiling. Your key enemy are various members of a anarchist organization called “Heaven Smile”, which have found a way to dress themselves in small, undetectable but deadly explosives and thus are able to easily get close to their required targets (including yourself). Meanwhile, the launch of a huge number of missiles appears to be ready to wipe Japan off the map; it is possible to stop it if the right people can be taken out in time. The fate of the nation states of the world are at hand, and only the assassination group of Killer7 can determine the end result.
