Sonic and the Secret Rings (Wii) – Initial Impressions
So far, compared to the “next gen” Sonic the Hedgehog game for the PS3 and the 360, this is much better. The game used, for lack of a better way to describe it, the Handlebar form (Smooth Moves) for controlling Sonic, which does limit you to a virtual rail to play along. Tilting the remote forward moves forward, tilt backwards for backwards and side to side for the obvious. Jumping is on a button, but you can do homing attacks by quickly pushing the remote forward when the enemies are highlighted in red, which can make some of the chain attacks a mini-workout at times.
The game has about 7 main levels (excluding the tutorial stuff), but each level has multiple challenges on it, including ring collection, completing a section in a limited amount of time, and the like, so there’s about 100 challenges or so in the game. Unfortunately, while the gameplay is better, the loading times can be a killer on this so it takes just a lot of time to finish a mission and to either retry it or go to a different one. But I hope the gameplay is going to improve upon what I’ve seen already so that this is more an annoyance and not yet another bad mark against the game.
