Klonoa (Wii) – Review

coverKlonoa is a remake of the classic PS1 game, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, both games made by Namco.  The remake does not attempt to change the core gameplay, which though simple to learn, leads to numerous possible uses in puzzles and boss fights; instead, this remake redoes the original game from it’s sprite-based version on the PS1 to a full 3D version taking full advantage of the Wii graphics. It is a very lovingly-redone remake, and for enthusists of the series, it is well worth it, but newcomers may find the game, while a solid experience, a bit lacking in difficulty and gameplay.

LocoRoco 2 (PSP) – Review

cover LocoRoco 2 is the sequel to the popular LocoRoco game, does exactly what a sequel should do – it provides the same fun, if somewhat simple, gameplay with a few added twists which don’t detract from the game’s core entertainment value, keeping the strong presentation in graphics and music that also made the game what it is.  Studio Japan’s put out another great game that works perfectly on the PSP and should be a part of any PSP owner’s collection.

LocoRoco (PSP) – Review Repost

coverLocoRoco“, developed by Sony for the PSP, is just the same type of quirky game that the system needs, just as Katamari Damacy was to the PS2, cute and entertaining all over, with but a few technical nits. But even that said, it doesn’t have quite the same grabbing power that Katamari had despite the numerous similarities.

Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty (PSN) – Review

quest-cover Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty is a downloadable title from Insomniac games for the PlayStation 3, continuing on from Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction in both story and gameplay.  The overall game continues the high quality work from Insomniac in the past and include new gameplay elements, but there are some aspects of design that are questionable and make the game feel as if it is lacking in features and content.  It is still a good effort and captures the series’ gameplay faithfully, but I feel more could have been done for such content.

Braid (XBLA) – Review

braid-cover Braid is a rather unique puzzler-platform game available through Xbox Live.  While the basic play makes the game look like your typical Mario clone, the bulk of the game is centered around the use of time manipulation and other time-related puzzles in order to collect hard-to-reach puzzles and complete the game.  The game is fantastically presented, and while the unique time-based puzzles are great, there is a very very steep learning curve as well as puzzles that require tight timing and controls in order to complete, and these may make the game too frustrating for those that lack the patience to solve them.  I feel the game could have used just a few more “tutorial” type puzzles which would have smoothed out the difficulty curve and made the game much more accessible.  Still, however, the game is one that should be praised for its distinctive approach.

LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures (360) – Review

cover LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is another LEGO-based game from Traveler’s Tales, who have previously done both LEGO Star Wars games.  While there are several elements that are reused, and much of the general gameplay hasn’t changed much, they have refocused the general approach on the adventure genre and solving puzzles to progress in the game, making it feel pretty fresh and showing that the series has more legs with other popular franchises.  The game is generally on the easy side and is a bit short, but it is entertaining throughout.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – Review

smg-cover2.jpgAfter the rather disappointing Super Mario Sunshine, word of a new true Mario title for the Wii got a lot of people excited about it, particularly once the theme of Mario-in-space was established. Now that that game is here as Super Mario Galaxy, its amazing how much this game has exceeded expectations – not only making up for what felt lacking in Sunshine, but perhaps even going beyond some of the best Mario titles already out there like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Bros. 3. It is amazing how well all the elements of the game, not only in gameplay but in presentation and difficulty, are pulled together to make one of the best video game titles to date.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – Initial Impressions

Oh man, this is already so much better than Super Mario Sunshine.  As probably most have seen the previews, much of the game takes place on small planetoids, and an excellent camera system is used as to avoid many of the problems from Sunshine while not being disorienting.  There’s parts that feel like a standard 2D Mario platformer, and the new additions for the Wii side (that I’ve gotten to), primarily the spin attack which through the first couple “galaxies” has been used rather nicely for defeating foes.  The controls feel nice and slick (using both Nunchuck and Remote) and really intuitive once you learn everything.  Plus this looks really really good – again, the Wii may not be pushing the envelope for graphics, but this is very pleasent to  look at.

The Simpsons Game (360) – Review

The Simpsons Game - Cover I should know better about video games based on non-video game franchises – rarely are the games any good when they have to try to map back to the work in question. While this isn’t truly the case with The Simpsons Game, developed and distributed by EA, as The Simpsons have tackled nearly every other media form and thus is much more adaptable than other shows, the game lacks a certain degree of realization. The game tries to present itself parodying the cliches from the video game industry, but in the end the game itself uses and exploits too many of those cliches as to make the gameplay bland and uninteresting. It’s still worth a look to see how the Simpsons writers have taken on video games, but even to that extent, it doesn’t seem like the best effort possible, and that if the developers were going for a video game parody, divorcing the idea from The Simpsons would have been better in the long term.

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction (PS3) – Review

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction - CoverRatchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction is the first installment of the Ratchet and Clank series to be made for the PS3. Developed by Insomniac games, the game continues exactly what the previous titles did: a fun platforming-shooting game that incorporates a variety of odd and exotic weapons. On its own, the game it outstanding, but considering where the series has been before, there’s a few elements that suggest that the number of ideas for new weapons and gadgets may be winding down, and some decisions on the approach to the game design are a bit disappointing to experienced players, though certainly are far from detracting from the overall enjoyment of the game.
