Klonoa (Wii) – Review

coverKlonoa is a remake of the classic PS1 game, Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, both games made by Namco.  The remake does not attempt to change the core gameplay, which though simple to learn, leads to numerous possible uses in puzzles and boss fights; instead, this remake redoes the original game from it’s sprite-based version on the PS1 to a full 3D version taking full advantage of the Wii graphics. It is a very lovingly-redone remake, and for enthusists of the series, it is well worth it, but newcomers may find the game, while a solid experience, a bit lacking in difficulty and gameplay.

MadWorld (Wii) – Review

cover The folks behind MadWorld, Platinum Games, have a lot of previously impressive games under their belt: Okami, Viewtiful Joe, and GodHand, to name a few, so it should be no surprise that MadWorld aims to keep up that trend, falling back to the developers’ more fighting-game style approach.  Thankfully, this assumption proves correct, as MadWorld delivers what exactly is promised with an awesome presentation.  While the gameplay does somewhat flatline in the latter part of the game, and there’s some aspect to its shortness, the rest of the game is really well done.

de Blob (Wii) – Review

de Blob, developed by Blue Tongue and distributed by THQ, is an interesting title – there’s similarities to Katamari Damacy throughout, but though it is not as quirky as that title, there’s still little touchs that remind me of why I enjoyed that game.  de Blob is a very good effort for a third party Wii game; it’s fun though can be tedious near the end, but does have a lot of collection items that will interest those types of games.  The presentation is very well done, particularly in the sound department.  It’s definitely the type of game that will appeal to those that like ones that go off the beaten path.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii) – Review

ssbb-cover Super Smash Bros. Brawl is Nintendo’s highly anticipated followup to the Gamecube’s Super Smash Bros. Melee. Not only does the game expand the cast of characters, now including Solid Snake and Sonic the Hedgehog to the core Nintendo cast, it adds in some new gameplay features such as Assist Trophies and Final Smashes, to make the game exciting. Add in the ability to play both single player and with others over Nintendo’s Wi-Fi network, and there’s countless hours of gameplay. The game has definitely lived up to the hype that it has been generating over the past few years.

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (PSP, PS2, Wii) – Review

harvey-birdman-cover Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law is High Voltage Software’s and Capcom’s take at taking the natural extension of the Ace Attorney games into the popular Adult Swim cartoon as to make a humorous adventure-type video game. Unfortunately, the game may capture the same game mechanics as the Ace Attorney series, but the integration of the animation against the typical adventure gameplay makes for an extremely awkward and extremely short title.

I will note I played this on the PSP, but I expect that there’s little difference in the PS2 and Wii versions from what I’ve read.

No More Heroes (Wii) – Review

no-more-heroes-coverNo More Heroes is another Sudo51 game (designer for Killer7) developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and distributed by Ubisoft. The game is a mix of open-world play as with Grand Theft Auto along with Wii-remote enable combat sections, and does a pretty good job of mixing the various game modes while giving a very tongue-in-cheek, darkly humorous story that reminds me very much of Kill Bill and other Tarantino works. It’s not a superb game, but it is definitely much more accessible and enjoyable than Killer7.

Raymen Raving Rabbids 2 (Wii) – Review

Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 by Ubisoft follows up on their party hit from last year, and does a good job of introducing new games and fixing a few problems that were present in the first game. While the overall game experience isn’t much from the single player standpoint, it’s a good game to have in your virtual backpocket to have available should you be hanging around with friends.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – Review

smg-cover2.jpgAfter the rather disappointing Super Mario Sunshine, word of a new true Mario title for the Wii got a lot of people excited about it, particularly once the theme of Mario-in-space was established. Now that that game is here as Super Mario Galaxy, its amazing how much this game has exceeded expectations – not only making up for what felt lacking in Sunshine, but perhaps even going beyond some of the best Mario titles already out there like Super Mario 64 or Super Mario Bros. 3. It is amazing how well all the elements of the game, not only in gameplay but in presentation and difficulty, are pulled together to make one of the best video game titles to date.

Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure (Wii) – Review

zack-and-wiki-coverZack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros’ Treasure, developed by Capcom, is hopefully what is the first of many more adventure/puzzle games for the Wii console. The game combines situational puzzles with the use of the Wii Remote nicely, albeit that it is possible to run into a situation where you have to restart a puzzle completely from the start and can be a major source of annoyance in the game. Regardless, the rest of the gameplay is pretty well done and provides a nice framework for followup games to work from.

Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) – Initial Impressions

Oh man, this is already so much better than Super Mario Sunshine.  As probably most have seen the previews, much of the game takes place on small planetoids, and an excellent camera system is used as to avoid many of the problems from Sunshine while not being disorienting.  There’s parts that feel like a standard 2D Mario platformer, and the new additions for the Wii side (that I’ve gotten to), primarily the spin attack which through the first couple “galaxies” has been used rather nicely for defeating foes.  The controls feel nice and slick (using both Nunchuck and Remote) and really intuitive once you learn everything.  Plus this looks really really good – again, the Wii may not be pushing the envelope for graphics, but this is very pleasent to  look at.
