Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney (NDS) - Review

apollocover.jpgApollo Justice: Ace Attorney is the fourth game in the laywering adventure game series by Capcom, and the first game in the series specifically developed for the Nintendo DS, such that it incorporates DS-unique features in part of the investigation and trial phases that were introduced in the DS remake of the first game, Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. The game definitely is a step up from the previous entries; the DS graphics are much more vivid, the added investigation methods work well, and the cases are much tighter and make more sense, though to some extent, this makes the game somewhat easier. However, it is still a good play and requires only minimal familiarity with the previous works to appreciate.

Killer7 (PS2, Wii) - Review Repost

killer7-cover Killer7 gained hype both through amazing stunning graphics, and word of mouth as being a piece of art rather than a game. While the end product is a strong, plot-driven game with graphics that still live up to the initial reports, the end result has some rough spots, with the game itself getting in the way of being able to appreciate Killer7 as art.

The game takes place “now”; you play as a member of an elite assassin group called Killer 7 (hence the title), which (at the start of the game) seems to be made up of 7 distinct persons but that are able to switch places with themselves at will. The backstory is developed throughout the game, and explaining more would be definitely spoiling. Your key enemy are various members of a anarchist organization called “Heaven Smile”, which have found a way to dress themselves in small, undetectable but deadly explosives and thus are able to easily get close to their required targets (including yourself). Meanwhile, the launch of a huge number of missiles appears to be ready to wipe Japan off the map; it is possible to stop it if the right people can be taken out in time. The fate of the nation states of the world are at hand, and only the assassination group of Killer7 can determine the end result.

Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law (PSP, PS2, Wii) - Review

harvey-birdman-cover Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law is High Voltage Software’s and Capcom’s take at taking the natural extension of the Ace Attorney games into the popular Adult Swim cartoon as to make a humorous adventure-type video game. Unfortunately, the game may capture the same game mechanics as the Ace Attorney series, but the integration of the animation against the typical adventure gameplay makes for an extremely awkward and extremely short title.

I will note I played this on the PSP, but I expect that there’s little difference in the PS2 and Wii versions from what I’ve read.

No More Heroes (Wii) - Review

no-more-heroes-coverNo More Heroes is another Sudo51 game (designer for Killer7) developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and distributed by Ubisoft. The game is a mix of open-world play as with Grand Theft Auto along with Wii-remote enable combat sections, and does a pretty good job of mixing the various game modes while giving a very tongue-in-cheek, darkly humorous story that reminds me very much of Kill Bill and other Tarantino works. It’s not a superb game, but it is definitely much more accessible and enjoyable than Killer7.

Jade Empire (XBX) - Review

jade-empire-cover.jpgJade Empire is BioWare’s second RPG for the Xbox console, following their success of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While there’s a lot in common in the formula of the game, they have worked to change the combat to reflect the change in setting, focusing on an active, real-time combat system over the previous turn based system. While some of these changes are positive, ultimately the game fails for two major reasons: it is short, in that it’s about 1/3rd shorter than KOTOR, and that the difficulty of the game, by default, seems awfully easy. It’s not a bad game, just not a solid effort as we’ve seen from BioWare before.

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 (PS2) - Review

persona3-cover

Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 is a non-traditional RPG developed and published by Atlus, which has several elements of old-school RPGs combined with dating simulation aspects to create a very unique game. While this uniqueness makes for a good starting game, it has a rather long time commitment to complete (70 hours or more) and suffers from being overly repetitive in gamplay and graphics about halfway through, unfortunately about the same time that the game’s story takes an interesting turn.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords (XBX)

kotor2-cover Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is a followup to the previous KOTOR game, this time developed by Obsidian Entertainment (borrowing heavily from BioWare’s resources), loosely tying the story to the previous game. While this is more that just an expansion or add on, changing some of the fundaments of combat for the better, other changes in the general overall structure in both story and game plot aren’t as strong, and make for a most disjointed game, but still reasonably enjoyable.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (XBX) - Review

kotor-cover Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR for short) is BioWare’s first major venture away from their lines of Dungeon & Dragons-based RPGs, though using the d20 system to apply it to the Star Wars universe with the help of LucasArts. (And yes, I’ve had this game for a while, but never got around to playing it or its sequel, but have been inspired through finishing Mass Effect to complete it). The game a great job of adapting the tabletop system to a semi-action RPG, though still has some of the same plot advancement trappings as the previous games, and unfortunately includes too many playable characters that, along with other inbalances in the game difficulty, makes some of them never see the light of battle in a single playthrough of the game, though may be possible to use them better on subsequent ones.
